Shelly's finally packin' on the pregnancy pounds. And she's not too happy about it. We had an OB appointment yesterday and she gained 6 pounds this month. That puts her up 2 1/2 pounds total for the pregnancy. Our Doctor says she usually sees people have a big jump around 24 to 26 weeks then it slows down a little again. Although the weight gain should start piling on during this last trimester.
Shelly had a touch of protein in her urine which she has had at every appointment since week 16. Our doctor hasn't been too worried about it but now that we're heading into the third trimester she wants to make sure it's not a problem. Shelly has to do a 24 urine sample. She has to catch her pee for 24 hours and then take it into the lab. She hates this kind of stuff but she'll do anything for Riley.
Although we're 25 weeks pregnant she's measuring 27 weeks. Maybe we've got a chubby little girl on our hands. We'll have more details about Riley on Tuesday. We have another Ultrasound appointment at Maternal Fetal Medicine to check on Riley and the status of the Hygroma.
We got an exciting Valentine surprise today. Riley's biological half sibling, Riley Elizabeth, was born today! Yeah!!! Congrats to Stacey and Angele who are home resting already with their little baby girl. Check them out at http://stacey-angele.blogspot.com/.
We had something very shocking happen in SLC this week. On Monday night an 18 year old male/boy went on a shooting spree in one of our downtown malls, Trolley Square. He killed 5 people and critically injured 4 others. We still don't know the motive behind his rampage. This one hits just way too close to home. The past couple of days my mind has been struggling with thoughts about how we are going to keep Riley safe in the current world we live in. I want to protect her and keep her as far away from harm as possible. But she's also got to live and experience life. A 16 year old girl was killed in the attack. She was at the mall with her mother who was critical injured. A father and son were also at the mall. The father was killed and the son critically injured. It's so damn sad and makes me angry, scared, confused, and terrified. Do we move to the middle of no where, never leave our house, and home school Riley. Absolutely not. That's not who we are. We must find a way to keep her as safe as possible in this crazy world we live in. It's just so damn scary.

Our Conception Story
After eight years together we were pretty sure we'd spend our life with our four legged kids, doing lots of camping, and traveling the world. On August 12, 2004 that all changed with the birth of our God Daughter Tate. We immediately fell completely in love with her and soon began to re-think our decision of not having kids.
In October 2005 we began the process of trying to conceive. As soon as we started trying Shelly began having very erratic cycles which made the process that more complicated. After four tries over six months we decided to schedule a consultation with the a Reproductive Specialist. We were desperate to conceive and on a limited time frame since Shelly had just turned 41. Dee was 35 at the time but not able to conceive due to a medical procedure.
Our first appointment with the Repro Man was May 2006. He suggested we try IVF using Dee's eggs and Shelly as the gestational mother. He felt this scenario would give us the highest chance for success of a healthy pregnancy. We spent a short amount of time weighing our options and decided this was the best choice. We began our first IVF cycle in August. They did the Egg Retrieval and Fertilization on 8/31. Three days later, 9/3, they transferred three embryos into Shelly. Then the wait began.
Shelly promised not to begin the home pregnancy test too soon. Dee had to travel out of state for business a week after the transfer and asked Shelly to please wait to test. BUT, the wait was too much for her and she started testing after a week. At first there was no line. But after a couple of days testing a faint line started to appear. When Dee came home from her trip Shelly told her, "I know I'm pregnant." Dee didn't believe her and insisted the line wasn't dark enough so she tested herself to compare. There was absolutely no line. She began to believe Shelly was pregnant but still had doubt. Dee went to the store and bought another brand of testing strips. After five home tests, we were convinced we we're pregnant due to all positive results. A blood test at two weeks confirmed it; we were going to have a baby!

I thought you were supposed to gain 20-30 lbs during pregnancy ?
I guess Shelly's doing something I have never heard of....2 1/2 lbs at 25 weeks and measuring at 27 weeks. Rock on.
I wish I had known about that when I was pregnant :) ha ha
It would make this loosing the baby weight thing A HELL of a lot easier.
I am scared every day for my kids. I want to keep them under my wings at all times.
I fear I couldn't go on in the case that anything were to happen to them.
It's this maternal need to protect our offspring. Which is why I've never understood child abuse.

very, very scary about the shooting rampage incident. just serves as a reminder of how really screwed up this world really is.
i, too, had to do the whole 24 hour urine collection. unfortunately for me, that is when they discovered that i had preeclampsia and subsequently made the decision to induce me at 36 weeks.
wow...only 2 1/2 lbs??? sounds like a blessing to me! i have heard of some women gaining like 50 lbs during pregnancy!
So how is it seeing pictures of your child's bio half siblings? Does it get you excited? I am curious to see pictures of all 3 kids as they grow. I wonder if they will have similarities.
I am still in shock about the shooting. I can't believe people were so easily able to back there for dinner on Valentine's day. It is so sad, and it brings me back to the Columbine shooting. I feel so sad about the people who lost their loved ones.
No matter what if I look at Andrew and our Riley, your Riley will be absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!

I gained way more than that at that stage. :P Hopefully the protein tests don't mean much. I had slight measurements of protein in my urine a couple times but it's still considered negative. Hopefully that's the case with Shelly too.
I can't wait to see what your Riley looks like. It will definitely be interesting to see what Riley (squared) and Andrew share in common. :)
