The Fluoride Debate

We are in the process of getting a water purifier installed because the water in our area is horrible, or at least that's what the salesman has told us. We know we have extremly hard water and are getting a water softener. But we are still up in the air on a water purifier. The salesman has me sold because supposedly our area has a higher level of contaminants (lead, sediment, chlorine, dissolved solids/mineral salts, cysts, radium & arsenic) than what the EPA recommends. Fact is, I think the water tastes fine and I can't really find anything that confirms his case besides what he can provide me with.

Then there is the fluoride debate. Our water is fluoridated. Some people have stated babies must have fluoridated water for their teeth. The dentist confirmed this for me and said if you don't use the fluoridated water you'll need to use fluoride supplements. Then I start digging around on the Internet and am now more confused. Some sites say not to rely on fluoridated water because you can't control how much fluoride your child is getting. Others scare you that you could be giving too much fluoride to your child.

So I was all set to cancel the purifier (saves us $800) in favor of fluoridated water. I called the salesman and he does his job on selling about how contaminated our water is and now has me on the fence again.

I'm looking for opinions on fluoride! Help!!!

I live in an area that has floride in the water and the kids doctor has always reasurred me that it is exactly what they need. I trust their doc very much so that is what I go by. It kindof sounds to me like the salesman is just trying to get his sale. Just my opinion. Rick grew up with well water and I swear it came out of the spout in chunks of metal but they loved their water and never had any problems. I think it really has to do with preference than neccesity. Like I say that is just my opinion you have to go with what feels best to you.

I agree with mel but if you do go with soft water and a purifier they do sell water with floride in it at the store and as long as you make a couple of bottles a day with that you are fine...we get bottled water here...it smells and tastes like sulfer. Yuck! The Dr asked if we drink tap water and I said no she said as long as we cook with tap water they get enough so I am sure if you get water with floride and give it to her a couple times a day you are fine...pluse this guy may have a way to get it back into your water. oh and we get a water dispencer and water deliveries and they told us they could bring water with floride...good luck it is so hard to decide what to do when youare trying to do what is best for your little ones!

It's all up to you! Our doctor and dentist have said that our flouridated water is just perfect for what he needs. Cam drinks a lot of water too. So I think this is just a personal parental decision. Don't you just love those! Trying to figure out what's best for your child.

For us the contaminants outweight the Floride in the water. We would love to buy a neutralizing/ionizing machine but it's over $3000 in Canada. It allows you to adjust PH levels. Safe levels for drinking and levels you need to wash dishes. Maybe when we move to the new house in a few years. The metals found in tap water are extremely high and if your filter neutralizes them it's better for you and babies. If the filter does not neutralize them then you are just wasting money.

Bottled water is not good either unless it says it's been Ionized. Fiji water is one of them.

Check it out. If you are willing to spend 800$ you might want to look into this one instead. Just a suggestion.

We have an on the faucet PUR filter system for regular drinking water. I make(made)all juice/bottles/etc with unfiltered water so that we are all getting flouride from the water.

I know that personally speaking, once I went to bottled/filtered water full-time(pre-kids) I started getting cavities like crazy (I had never had a cavitiy prior to my 30's). Once I added tap water back in, I stopped getting cavitities. Maybe not connected - but maybe it is.

Good luck on your decision.

I am a Dental Hygenist in a Pediatric office. The Dr. I work for suggests at least 4oz of fluoridated water. Hope that helps...

Don't know if you made your decision yet or not but wanted you to know that you can go to the local government utility website and see exactly what is in the water in your area. They have to publish their report annually & then you can compare it to everything else out there. As for flouride - I grew up with well water. My parents made us take flouride pills. I threw mine away every day - my sister ate hers religiously. She has had 5 root canals. I still don't have a cavity. Go figure.

Our Conception Story

After eight years together we were pretty sure we'd spend our life with our four legged kids, doing lots of camping, and traveling the world. On August 12, 2004 that all changed with the birth of our God Daughter Tate. We immediately fell completely in love with her and soon began to re-think our decision of not having kids.

In October 2005 we began the process of trying to conceive. As soon as we started trying Shelly began having very erratic cycles which made the process that more complicated. After four tries over six months we decided to schedule a consultation with the a Reproductive Specialist. We were desperate to conceive and on a limited time frame since Shelly had just turned 41. Dee was 35 at the time but not able to conceive due to a medical procedure.

Our first appointment with the Repro Man was May 2006. He suggested we try IVF using Dee's eggs and Shelly as the gestational mother. He felt this scenario would give us the highest chance for success of a healthy pregnancy. We spent a short amount of time weighing our options and decided this was the best choice. We began our first IVF cycle in August. They did the Egg Retrieval and Fertilization on 8/31. Three days later, 9/3, they transferred three embryos into Shelly. Then the wait began.

Shelly promised not to begin the home pregnancy test too soon. Dee had to travel out of state for business a week after the transfer and asked Shelly to please wait to test. BUT, the wait was too much for her and she started testing after a week. At first there was no line. But after a couple of days testing a faint line started to appear. When Dee came home from her trip Shelly told her, "I know I'm pregnant." Dee didn't believe her and insisted the line wasn't dark enough so she tested herself to compare. There was absolutely no line. She began to believe Shelly was pregnant but still had doubt. Dee went to the store and bought another brand of testing strips. After five home tests, we were convinced we we're pregnant due to all positive results. A blood test at two weeks confirmed it; we were going to have a baby!
